Psalms 63

Pslm 63, Ps 63, Psa 63, Psm 63, Pss 63

Psalms 63

1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.

7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

8 My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.

9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.

10 They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes.

11 But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

Summary and the Meaning of Psalm 63 from the KJV Holy Bible

Psalm 63 is a profound expression of divine longing and spiritual satisfaction. This psalm, which is attributed to King David, is a passionate declaration of his deep yearning for God, his relentless pursuit of God's presence, and his unwavering confidence in God's protection and provision. It is a testament to the intimate relationship between God and the human soul, even in the midst of trials and tribulations.

Context and Setting of Psalm 63

To fully comprehend the depth and breadth of Psalm 63, it is essential to understand its context and setting. The psalm's superscription indicates that it was written by David when he was in the wilderness of Judah. This wilderness period represents one of the most challenging times in David's life, a time of uncertainty, danger, and deprivation. Yet, it is in this harsh and barren wilderness that David's spiritual longing and thirst for God are most vividly expressed. It is also in this wilderness that David experiences God's presence, protection, and provision in profound and tangible ways.

Main Themes of Psalm 63

Psalm 63 can be divided into three sections, each of which highlights a major theme: the longing for God (verses 1-4), the satisfaction in God (verses 5-8), and the confidence in God's protection and provision (verses 9-11).

The Longing for God: The psalm opens with a powerful and poignant expression of longing: "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is" (Psalm 63:1). This metaphor of thirsting for God in a dry and barren land vividly encapsulates the depth and intensity of David's longing for God. It underscores the fact that God is not merely a nice-to-have addition to our lives, but an essential and integral part of our existence. Without God, our lives are as barren and desolate as a parched wilderness.

The Satisfaction in God: Despite the harshness of the wilderness, David finds satisfaction and fulfillment in God. He declares, "My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips" (Psalm 63:5). This metaphor of feasting on God's goodness underscores the fact that God is not only the object of our longing, but also the source of our satisfaction. In God, we find the nourishment, sustenance, and fulfillment that our souls crave.

The Confidence in God's Protection and Provision: In the final section of the psalm, David expresses his unwavering confidence in God's protection and provision. He declares, "But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped" (Psalm 63:11). This declaration underscores the fact that God is not only the object of our longing and the source of our satisfaction, but also our protector and provider. In God, we find the security, safety, and provision that we need to navigate the challenges and uncertainties of life.

Meaning and Application of Psalm 63

Psalm 63 is more than just a historical record of David's wilderness experience; it is a timeless spiritual guide for all who seek to cultivate a deeper and more intimate relationship with God. It teaches us that our longing for God is not a sign of spiritual deficiency, but a mark of spiritual vitality. It reminds us that our satisfaction in God is not a luxury, but a necessity. And it assures us that our confidence in God's protection and provision is not a blind leap of faith, but a reasonable and rational response to God's proven track record of faithfulness.

The psalm also offers practical lessons for our spiritual journey. It encourages us to seek God earnestly, to praise God joyfully, and to trust God completely. It invites us to turn our wilderness experiences into worship experiences, and our trials into testimonies. It challenges us to move beyond a superficial and transactional relationship with God, to a profound and transformational relationship with God. And it calls us to anchor our lives not in the shifting sands of circumstances, but in the solid rock of God's character and promises.

In conclusion, Psalm 63 is a powerful and poignant testament to the beauty and bounty of a life lived in intimate communion with God. It is a testament to the fact that our longing for God, our satisfaction in God, and our confidence in God's protection and provision are not burdens to bear, but blessings to embrace. It is a testament to the fact that even in the wilderness of life, we can experience the wonder of God's presence, the warmth of God's love, and the wealth of God's grace.
