Pslm 113, Ps 113, Psa 113, Psm 113, Pss 113

Psalms 113

1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD.

2 Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore.

3 From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD's name is to be praised.

4 The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.

5 Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,

6 Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!

7 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;

8 That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

9 He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.

Summary and the meaning of Psalm 113

Psalm 113 is one of the Hallel Psalms, a collection of hymns of praise used in Jewish worship on special occasions like Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. This Psalm stands out as a glorious hymn of praise to God, exalting Him for His transcendent majesty and His gracious condescension. It is an invitation to praise God, a proclamation of His greatness, and a celebration of His gracious acts towards humanity. It is a psalm that invites us to join in the chorus of praise, recognizing God’s greatness and His merciful actions towards us.

The Call to Praise

The Psalm begins with a call to praise, "Praise ye the Lord. Praise, O ye servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord." The psalmist encourages the servants of the Lord to praise Him. The repetition of the word praise is significant, emphasizing the importance of praise in our relationship with God. The psalmist doesn't merely suggest, but commands everyone to praise God. This is a universal call, extending to all people, regardless of their status or circumstances.

The Greatness of God

The psalmist then goes on to describe the greatness of God. He says, "Who is like unto the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high, who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!" God's greatness is beyond comparison. He is high above all, yet He humbles Himself to observe what's happening in heaven and on earth. This dual nature of God - His transcendence and His immanence - is a recurring theme in the psalms and one that is strongly emphasized in Psalm 113.

God's Merciful Acts

The psalmist also talks about God's merciful acts. He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the ash heap, setting them among princes. He gives the barren woman a home, making her a joyful mother. These acts reveal God's heart for the downtrodden and His power to change circumstances. They are a testament to God's justice, mercy, and love.

The Meaning and Application of Psalm 113

Psalm 113 paints a picture of a God who is both transcendent and immanent. He is the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, yet He is also the One who stoops down to look at the heavens and the earth. He is the Creator of the universe, yet He is deeply concerned with the affairs of human beings, especially the poor and the needy. This dual nature of God is a source of comfort and hope for us. It assures us that God is not detached from our world or indifferent to our struggles. He is intimately involved in our lives and is capable of transforming our circumstances.

Psalm 113 also teaches us about the importance of praise. Praise is not just a religious duty or a ritualistic exercise. It is a response to God's greatness and His acts of mercy. It is a way of acknowledging God's sovereignty and His goodness. It is a means of connecting with God and experiencing His presence. When we praise God, we align ourselves with His purposes and His will. We declare our faith in His power and His promises. We express our gratitude for His love and His grace. Praise is a transformative experience that lifts our spirits and strengthens our faith.

In conclusion, Psalm 113 is a powerful hymn of praise that invites us to recognize and celebrate the greatness of God and His merciful acts. It challenges us to live a life of praise, regardless of our circumstances. It encourages us to trust in God's power to transform our lives and to believe in His love for us. It is a psalm that resonates with the heart of every believer, stirring us to worship and adoration. Let us therefore heed the call of the psalmist and "praise the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore."
