Psalms 112

1 Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

2 His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.

4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

6 Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.

7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.

8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.

9 He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.

10 The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

Summary and the Meaning of Psalm 112 from the KJV Holy Bible

Psalm 112, a part of the Book of Psalms in the King James Version (KJV) of the Holy Bible, is a profound and richly layered narrative that offers guidance for a life well-lived in accordance with God's will. This psalm is not merely a collection of verses, but a comprehensive guide to the virtues that lead to a blessed life, as well as the rewards that come with it. It emphasizes the importance of faith, righteousness, generosity, and fear of the Lord, and promises prosperity, stability, and legacy to those who embody these virtues.

A Celebration of Righteousness

The psalm begins with a blessing, "Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments" (Psalm 112:1). This opening verse sets the tone for the entire psalm, highlighting that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the foundation of a righteous life. This 'fear' does not denote terror, but rather, a deep respect and reverence for the divine authority of God. It is a call to obedience, to live in accordance with His commandments and to find delight in doing so.

The psalmist further emphasizes that the descendants of such a man will be mighty upon earth, and the generation of the upright will be blessed. This suggests a legacy of righteousness, where virtuous living not only benefits the individual but also has a lasting impact on their lineage. The idea of a righteous legacy is a profound theme in this psalm, suggesting that our actions and choices extend beyond our personal lives and influence generations to come.

The Rewards of Righteousness

Psalm 112 also outlines the rewards that come with righteousness - wealth, prosperity, and a good name. These rewards, however, are not the end goal. They are the natural outcomes of a life lived in alignment with divine principles. The psalmist makes it clear that the righteous will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end, they will look in triumph on their foes (Psalm 112:7-8).

This serves as a reassurance that those who trust in God and live righteously need not fear adversity. Their faith and integrity will provide them with the strength and resilience to face any challenge. This is a powerful message of hope and encouragement, a promise that faith and righteousness will ultimately lead to victory.

The Virtue of Generosity

A significant part of Psalm 112 is dedicated to the virtue of generosity. The psalmist states, "He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth forever" (Psalm 112:9). Here, the psalmist portrays the righteous man as not just a recipient of God's blessings, but also as a conduit of those blessings to others, especially the less fortunate. This suggests that true righteousness is not merely about personal piety, but also about empathy, compassion, and generosity towards others.

The promise that his righteousness will endure forever implies that the impact of his generosity will have a lasting effect. It suggests that acts of kindness and generosity do not go unnoticed by God and they contribute to the enduring righteousness of the individual.

The Wicked Envy the Righteous

The psalm concludes with a stark contrast between the blessed life of the righteous and the fate of the wicked. The psalmist states, "The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish" (Psalm 112:10). This signifies that the wicked, despite their envy, will not attain the blessings of the righteous. Their desires will perish, leaving them in a state of dissatisfaction and regret.

This contrast serves to further highlight the rewards of righteousness and the futility of wickedness. It is a stark reminder that while wickedness may offer temporary pleasures, it ultimately leads to disappointment and destruction.

Conclusion: A Guide to Righteous Living

In conclusion, Psalm 112 provides a comprehensive guide to righteous living, highlighting the virtues of faith, obedience, generosity, and fear of the Lord. It promises prosperity, stability, and legacy to those who live in accordance with these virtues and warns of the futility of wickedness. It is a timeless reminder that our actions and choices have a profound impact on our lives and the lives of those around us, extending even to future generations. It assures us that despite the challenges and adversities we may face, living a life of righteousness in accordance with God's commandments will ultimately lead to triumph and a lasting legacy.
