Psalms 59

Pslm 59, Ps 59, Psa 59, Psm 59, Pss 59

Psalms 59

1 Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.

2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.

3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.

4 They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.

5 Thou therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.

6 They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

7 Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?

8 But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.

9 Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence.

10 The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.

11 Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.

12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.

13 Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.

14 And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

15 Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied.

16 But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

17 Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.

It is attributed to King David, a figure known for his deep faith and his struggles against numerous adversaries. In this psalm, David pleads with God for protection, expressing his trust in God as his refuge and strength. This psalm is a testament to the enduring faith of a man in distress, showcasing the depth of his trust in God's divine providence. The main themes of Psalm 59 are faith, divine protection, deliverance from enemies, and ultimate justice.

Context and Background of Psalm 59

The psalm's inscription provides a historical context for its composition which refers to a time when David was being pursued by King Saul, who was intent on killing him out of jealousy and fear. David was trapped in his own house, with Saul's men waiting outside to kill him. In this dire situation, David composed this psalm as a prayer for deliverance. This psalm, therefore, is a cry for help in a time of great distress and danger.

Analysis of Psalm 59

The psalm can be divided into three main sections. The first section (verses 1-5) is a plea for God's help against the enemies. David describes his enemies as workers of iniquity and bloodthirsty, underscoring their malicious intent. He appeals to God's justice, asking Him not to let the wicked triumph.

The second section (verses 6-15) describes the wickedness of the enemies and David's trust in God's protection. He compares his enemies to dogs that roam about for food and grumble if they are not satisfied. Despite their threat, David expresses his unwavering faith in God as his fortress and refuge. He prays for God's judgment upon his enemies but also asks that they be kept alive as a testament to God's justice and power.

The final section (verses 16-17) is a declaration of praise to God. David expresses his confidence in God's deliverance and His steadfast love. He vows to sing praises to God, acknowledging Him as his strength and refuge. This section reaffirms the theme of unwavering faith in God's protection and deliverance.

Themes of Psalm 59

One of the main themes of Psalm 59 is the faith in God's protection. Despite the immediate danger, David does not lose his faith in God. He refers to God as his "defence" and "refuge" (Psalm 59:9, 16), expressing his absolute trust in God's protection. This unwavering faith in the face of adversity is a powerful testament to David's deep relationship with God.

Another significant theme is divine protection. David acknowledges that his safety is not in his own hands, but in God's. He prays fervently for God's intervention, highlighting his dependence on divine protection. This theme is not exclusive to David's situation but is applicable to all believers who find themselves in perilous situations.

The theme of deliverance from enemies is also prominent in Psalm 59. David prays not only for protection but also for deliverance from his enemies. He asks God to "deliver me from mine enemies, O my God" (Psalm 59:1). This plea for deliverance underscores the intensity of David's predicament and his reliance on God for salvation.

Finally, the theme of ultimate justice is evident in this psalm. David prays for God's justice to prevail, asking Him to "let them be caught in their pride" (Psalm 59:12). He believes that God will ultimately judge the wicked, ensuring that justice is served. This theme underscores the moral dimension of David's faith, highlighting his belief in God's righteous judgment.

The Meaning of Psalm 59

Psalm 59 is a testament to the power of faith and prayer in times of distress. It serves as a reminder that no matter how dire the circumstances, believers can turn to God for protection and deliverance. The psalm teaches that faith in God's divine protection can provide strength and courage in the face of adversity.

Moreover, the psalm underscores the importance of acknowledging God's ultimate justice. It encourages believers to trust in God's righteous judgment, confident that He will not let the wicked triumph. This message of ultimate justice provides hope and reassurance in times of uncertainty and injustice.

Furthermore, Psalm 59 demonstrates the power of praise. Despite his precarious situation, David vows to sing praises to God, acknowledging His steadfast love and faithfulness. This expression of praise in the midst of adversity is a testament to David's deep faith and his recognition of God's divine providence.

In conclusion, Psalm 59 is a powerful psalm that showcases the depth of King David's faith in God's divine protection and ultimate justice.
