Psalms 27

Pslm 27, Ps 27, Psa 27, Psm 27, Pss 27

Psalms 27

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.

3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.

7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.

8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.

9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

11 Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.

12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

Summary and the Meaning of Psalm 27 from the KJV Holy Bible

Psalm 27, a psalm of David, is a heartfelt declaration of faith and trust in the Lord. The psalm presents a vivid illustration of the believer's confidence in the divine protection and guidance, despite the adversities that might surround them. The themes of faith, hope, courage, and prayer emerge prominently in this psalm, touching upon the essence of the human experience in relation to the divine.

The psalm opens with a declaration of the Lord as the psalmist's light and salvation, a metaphorical representation of divine guidance and deliverance. This profound statement sets the tone for the rest of the psalm, emphasizing the unshakeable trust the psalmist has in the Lord. "The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1, KJV). The rhetorical questions serve to underline the absolute reliance and confidence in the Lord, dismissing any possibility of fear or doubt.

Faith and Confidence in God

The theme of faith and confidence in God is a recurring motif in Psalm 27. The psalmist repeatedly affirms his trust in the Lord, even in the face of adversity. This faith is not passive but active, as it is expressed through prayer and worship. The psalmist seeks the Lord's face, which symbolizes seeking His presence and favor. "When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek." (Psalm 27:8, KJV). This response shows a deep longing and commitment to pursue God's presence and will, demonstrating an intimate relationship with the divine.

The Hope for Deliverance

Psalm 27 also expresses hope for deliverance from enemies and adversities. The psalmist acknowledges the presence of enemies and the potential for danger, but remains hopeful because of his trust in the Lord. This hope is not wishful thinking, but a firm expectation based on the faithfulness and power of God. "Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident." (Psalm 27:3, KJV). The psalmist's hope is anchored in the Lord, who is perceived as a refuge and fortress in times of distress.

The Power of Prayer

Prayer is a significant component of Psalm 27. The psalmist's prayers reflect his dependence on God and his desire for a deeper relationship with Him. The psalmist prays for protection, guidance, and the opportunity to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life. "Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me." (Psalm 27:7, KJV). This prayer signifies a humble recognition of human limitations and the need for divine intervention. It also reveals a spiritual hunger to experience God's presence continuously.

The Courage to Face Adversities

Another striking feature of Psalm 27 is the courage exhibited by the psalmist in the face of adversities. The psalmist is not oblivious to the threats and dangers that surround him, but he refuses to be overcome by fear. His courage stems from his trust in the Lord, who he believes will hide him in His pavilion in the day of trouble. "For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock." (Psalm 27:5, KJV). This verse illustrates the believer's assurance of divine protection, which gives them the courage to face any adversity.

Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, Psalm 27 is a profound expression of faith, hope, courage, and prayer. It underscores the believer's confidence in the Lord's protection and guidance, despite the adversities that might surround them. The psalmist's expressions of trust and reliance on God serve as an inspiration for believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of trials and tribulations. The psalm also encourages believers to seek God's presence and favor through prayer and worship, and to cultivate an intimate relationship with the divine. Finally, the psalm offers a message of hope and courage, reminding believers of the divine protection and deliverance that comes from trusting in the Lord.
