Proverbs 2

Prov 2, Pr 2, Prv 2

Proverbs 2

1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.

9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;

11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;

13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;

15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:

16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;

17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.

18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.

19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.

21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.

22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

Summary and the Meaning of Chapter 2 of the Book of Proverbs

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed to King Solomon, known for his great wisdom and understanding. Chapter 2 of the Book of Proverbs is a continuation of the teachings and wisdom found in Chapter 1. It begins with an exhortation to seek wisdom and understanding, and goes on to discuss the benefits of living a righteous life and the consequences of following the ways of the wicked.

The Main Themes of Chapter 2

There are several main themes that can be found in Chapter 2 of the Book of Proverbs. These include the importance of seeking wisdom and understanding, the benefits of living a righteous life, and the consequences of following the ways of the wicked. Let us take a closer look at each of these themes and their significance in this chapter.

The Importance of Seeking Wisdom and Understanding

The opening verses of Chapter 2 emphasize the importance of seeking wisdom and understanding. It says, "My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding" (Proverbs 2:1-3). This passage highlights the active pursuit of wisdom and understanding, rather than passively waiting for it to come to us. It requires effort and determination to gain wisdom and understanding, and this is something that we must actively seek.

The chapter goes on to describe the importance of wisdom and understanding, comparing it to hidden treasures. It says, "If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God" (Proverbs 2:4-5). Just as we would diligently search for hidden treasures, we must also diligently seek after wisdom and understanding. This shows that wisdom and understanding are highly valued and should be sought after with great effort.

The Benefits of Living a Righteous Life

Chapter 2 also discusses the benefits of living a righteous life. It says, "He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly" (Proverbs 2:7). This means that for those who live a righteous life, wisdom and understanding will be their protection and shield. It also says, "He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints" (Proverbs 2:8). This shows that living a righteous life leads to protection and preservation from God.

Additionally, the chapter talks about the importance of having integrity and honesty in our actions. It says, "When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee" (Proverbs 2:10-11). This means that when we have wisdom and knowledge, we will have the ability to make wise and discerning decisions, which will ultimately lead to our protection and safety.

The Consequences of Following the Ways of the Wicked

On the other hand, Chapter 2 also warns against following the ways of the wicked. It says, "To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked" (Proverbs 2:12-14). This passage highlights the destructive nature of the wicked and their delight in doing evil. Choosing to follow their ways will ultimately lead to destruction and harm.

The chapter goes on to describe the consequences of following the ways of the wicked. It says, "But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it" (Proverbs 2:22). This shows that choosing to follow the ways of the wicked will ultimately lead to their downfall and destruction.
