Psalms 116

Pslm 116, Ps 116, Psa 116, Psm 116, Pss 116

Psalms 116

1 I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.

2 Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

3 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.

4 Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.

5 Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.

6 The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.

7 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.

8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

9 I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

10 I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted:

11 I said in my haste, All men are liars.

12 What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?

13 I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.

14 I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.

15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

16 O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.

17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.

18 I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.

19 In the courts of the LORD's house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.

Summary and the Meaning of Psalm 116

Psalm 116, found in the Christian Holy Bible and the Jewish Tanakh, is a profound expression of faith, gratitude, and devotion. This psalm is a heartfelt, personal testimony of the psalmist's deep love for God, borne out of a profound experience of deliverance from the brink of death. The psalmist expresses gratitude for God's mercy, faithfulness, and saving grace, which have not only delivered him from a literal death, but also from spiritual death and despair. The psalmist's fervent love for God, his deep gratitude for God's deliverance, and his commitment to serve God and keep his vows to Him in the presence of God's people form the main themes of Psalm 116.

Love for God

The psalmist's profound love for God is a central theme in Psalm 116. This love is not born out of a simple religious obligation but arises from the psalmist's personal experience of God's mercy and saving grace. In verse 1, the psalmist declares, "I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications." This verse reveals that the psalmist's love for God is a response to God's attentiveness to his prayers and his cries for help. The psalmist's love for God is also seen in his commitment to call on the Lord as long as he lives (verse 2), indicating a deep, enduring relationship with God.

Gratitude for Deliverance

Gratitude for deliverance is another major theme in Psalm 116. The psalmist vividly describes his dire situation in verses 3 and 4, where he speaks of being entangled by the cords of death and confronted by the terrors of the grave. But God heard his cry for mercy and delivered him. In response, the psalmist expresses his gratitude towards God, proclaiming, "The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion" (verse 5). This profound gratitude is echoed throughout the psalm, as the psalmist continually acknowledges God's mercy, faithfulness, and saving grace.

Commitment to Serve God

The psalmist's commitment to serve God and keep his vows to Him is also a central theme in Psalm 116. Having been delivered from death, the psalmist pledges to serve God faithfully and fulfill his vows to Him. He declares, "I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living" (verse 9), demonstrating his commitment to live a life that honours God. Furthermore, the psalmist promises to fulfill his vows to God in the presence of all His people (verses 14 and 18), emphasizing his determination to publicly declare his faith and commitment to God.

The Meaning of Psalm 116

Psalm 116 holds a profound message for believers. It teaches that love for God should be a response to His love for us, which is manifested in His mercy and saving grace. It also teaches that gratitude is a fitting response to God's deliverance. The psalmist's commitment to serve God and fulfill his vows to Him serves as a model for believers, encouraging them to live a life that honours God and to publicly declare their faith and commitment to Him.

Furthermore, Psalm 116 reminds believers of the value of prayer and the importance of calling on God in times of distress. The psalmist's experience of God hearing his cry for mercy and delivering him from the brink of death serves as a powerful testimony to the effectiveness of prayer and the faithfulness of God. It encourages believers to trust in God and to call on Him in times of need, confident in the knowledge that God hears and answers prayers.

In conclusion, Psalm 116 is a powerful psalm that speaks of love for God, gratitude for deliverance, and commitment to serve God. It is a testament to God's mercy, faithfulness, and saving grace, and serves as a model for believers, encouraging them to love God deeply, to be grateful for His deliverance, and to serve Him faithfully. Through its powerful message, Psalm 116 continues to inspire and encourage believers, assuring them of God's unfailing love and faithfulness.
